That is why people start replenishing their fuel supplies long before winter sets in. However, simply going to the forest, cutting down trees there, or chopping branches for firewood is prohibited. Such actions are considered a violation of current legislation and can lead to fines. Mykola Kovalenko, a forester from one of the forestry departments in the Kyiv region, told the Noviny.LIVE website whether Ukrainians can legally harvest firewood in the forests in the summer and what is required for this.

What documents are needed to harvest firewood in the forest

You can harvest wood for your own needs only if you have the appropriate permits. Citizens must have documents confirming:

the right to carry out felling;

the legal origin of the wood.

“You need to issue a “logging ticket”. This is a document that is issued for the right to harvest wood, including firewood, according to established rules. In addition, when buying firewood from official forestry enterprises or state structures, you must have a consignment note or a freight bill, a purchase document, and confirmation of origin,” Kovalenko specified.

In the case when citizens plan to harvest firewood themselves, all work must be previously agreed with the forestry or forestry enterprise. Only after receiving the appropriate permit can harvesting begin.

What is a logging ticket and how to get it

According to the Procedure for Issuing Special Permits for the Use of Forest Resources, it is the logging ticket that is the main document that regulates the conduct of such work.

It specifies the deadlines for the work, the permitted volume of wood harvesting, requirements for the improvement of the territory after the completion of felling, as well as the amount of payments for the use of forest resources.

The authorized forestry authorities are responsible for issuing logging permits. To obtain a permit, a citizen or organization must submit an appropriate application and a package of documents. Usually, it includes:

a work plan;
materials regarding the forest area where wood is planned to be harvested.

However, there are exceptions. In some cases, a logging permit can be issued after the start of work, but no later than a month later. This option is allowed during the elimination of emergency situations, the removal of dangerous trees near highways, power lines and other infrastructure facilities.

This rule also applies during the elimination of the consequences of emergencies, natural disasters or forest fires. Therefore, Ukrainians who plan to harvest firewood on their own should take care of the execution of the necessary documents in advance. This will avoid violations of the law and possible punishment.

Firewood remains an extremely important resource for many Ukrainians.
