Buckwheat is considered unprofitable, and it is being replaced by other crops that provide faster and greater profits. If this trend is not reversed, then in a few years buckwheat will stop being sown in Ukraine altogether, and it will become a very expensive, and most importantly, scarce delicacy.

What is wrong with this crop, which has been in the daily diet of Ukrainians from time immemorial, and why farmers refuse to grow it, said Oleksiy Pinchuk, director of the department of the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, writes agroweek.

Demand for buckwheat continues to decline in Ukraine, which negatively affects its production. To stabilize the market situation and make the cultivation of this crop more economically profitable, comprehensive solutions are needed that will cover both state policy and support for the agricultural sector, says Pinchuk.

According to the official, the current low profitability of buckwheat cultivation is largely a consequence of the full-scale war. Due to the lack of sufficient state support, limited access to financing and the rapid growth of production costs, farmers are increasingly abandoning this crop in favor of more profitable crops. Additional pressure is created by problems with energy supply, rising fuel and logistics prices, and this further discourages farmers from growing buckwheat.

Why farmers are reducing crops

The main factor forcing farmers to abandon growing buckwheat remains the low level of profitability. In war conditions, farms seek to minimize risks and choose crops that can provide higher and faster profits. The increase in production costs, difficulties with credit, expensive transportation and instability of economic activity lead to a gradual reduction in the area sown with buckwheat.

What should be the state support?

Oleksiy Pinchuk notes that direct subsidies can only be a temporary support tool. In his opinion, systematic subsidization of producers does not solve the problem in the long term, as it makes the market dependent on budget assistance and reduces the competitiveness of the industry.

Instead, he suggests focusing on creating an effective development strategy that will provide for the targeted use of financial resources. Among the possible directions are improving the logistics infrastructure, expanding farmers’ access to credit, developing risk insurance mechanisms, as well as investments in increasing yields and production efficiency.

Export as an opportunity for market development

According to experts, it is possible to increase the profitability of buckwheat production not only through internal changes, but also by expanding external sales markets. Promoting Ukrainian products abroad and finding new trading partners will increase demand, balance the market, and create the prerequisites for increasing purchase prices.

Despite the fact that this year’s price for buckwheat is significantly higher than last year, Ukrainian farmers still refuse to sow this crop.
