The regulator\u2019s sudden decision to issue money of a much higher denomination has sparked a wave of concern among Ukrainians, forcing officials to urgently explain whether the \u201cprinting press\u201d has been turned on in the country and whether it is worth waiting for the appearance of banknotes of an even higher denomination.<\/p>\n
After the official announcement of the release of a new banknote of the highest denomination of 2,000 hryvnias, questions about the financial regulator\u2019s further steps began to spread actively among Ukrainians. Citizens were quite interested in whether the next stage of the reform would be the appearance in wallets of an even larger banknote \u2014 for example, a denomination of 5,000 hryvnias. This was reported by the press service of the National Bank of Ukraine and answered the main concerns of society.<\/p>\n
Is it worth waiting for 5,000 hryvnias<\/p>\n
The National Bank explained that decisions to introduce new denominations are not made spontaneously, but based on a deep analysis of economic factors. Experts use special mathematical models, which are used by the world’s leading central banks. In response to the question about the possibility of introducing a 5,000-hryvnia banknote, the regulator did all the dots on the “i”.<\/p>\n
“When considering the issue of introducing banknotes of higher denominations, the National Bank primarily takes into account economic factors and models. Currently, the optimal highest denomination for our country is 2,000 hryvnia,” the department emphasized, rejecting the idea of \u200b\u200ba five-thousand-hryvnia banknote.<\/p>\n
Why there was an urgent need for a two-thousand-hryvnia banknote<\/p>\n
The main reason for such an update was significant economic changes over the past seven years. Since the appearance of the 1,000-hryvnia banknote, the average salary of Ukrainians has tripled, and prices have doubled. If earlier ten of the highest denominations were enough to issue an average salary, now more than 30 such pieces of paper are needed for this.<\/p>\n
In addition, due to the war, the amount of cash in circulation has more than doubled and exceeded 970 billion hryvnias. At the same time, the NBU reassures: the issuance of new money does not mean turning on the \u201cprinting press\u201d. New banknotes will be issued exclusively to replace worn-out ones, so this will in no way provoke an increase in inflation.<\/p>\n
Innovative protection and historical symbolism<\/p>\n
Officially, the 2,000 hryvnia banknote will enter circulation on September 4, 2026. It will depict the prominent Ukrainian dissident poet Vasyl Stus. The date itself has deep historical symbolism, because it was on this day that the poet held his first public protest and, exactly 20 years later, tragically died in a Soviet camp.<\/p>\n
The new money will be a real technological breakthrough in the field of security and will have more than 20 elements of protection. This is the first banknote in the world to receive a unique animated ribbon AnimaTM Colour. Thanks to this polychrome detail, when the angle of inclination changes, the image of the Trident will effectively change to the hryvnia sign.<\/p>\n
Let us recall that psychologically, the appearance of new money may have a depressing effect on the population, who will perceive it as a signal to increase prices.
