The European Union countries are not ready to discuss the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine again. This was reported to the Babel correspondent by a European diplomat familiar with the issue.<\/p>\n
Assessing whether diplomats will return to these debates in the fall, the interlocutor noted: “We’ll see. If we remember how hard we discussed at the end of last year, I don’t see any desire to raise this issue again yet. The doubts and remarks of individual countries have not changed. We will solve this problem when we come to it.”<\/p>\n
At the same time, the diplomat noted that the need to support Ukraine with money is constantly changing. Therefore, the EU will look for a good moment to return to this issue again, taking into account how much money Kyiv will need.<\/p>\n
What preceded<\/p>\n
The statement of the European diplomat was preceded by a visit by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost to Kyiv on August 18. At a joint press conference, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga called on European partners to discuss again how to transfer frozen Russian resources to Ukraine. Sybiga emphasized that this is fair, because the World Bank estimates the damage that Russia has caused to Ukrainian infrastructure at over $600 billion. He emphasized that Kyiv needs such support for macro-financial stability.<\/p>\n
His Belgian counterpart, Maxim Prevost, responded that Brussels is ready to reconsider its position, but immediately clarified that the risks that the Belgian side warned about earlier have not disappeared. The main condition, according to him, remains unchanged – the legal, financial and systemic risks of such a decision should be shared among all EU countries, and not Belgium itself. Last year, the expected solidarity from other capitals, according to Prevost, did not happen.<\/p>\n
The frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia in the European Union are estimated at over \u20ac200 billion. More than half of them are stored in the Belgian financial institution Euroclear. EU countries are using the proceeds from frozen Russian assets to finance aid to Ukraine. The previous payment was made in the spring of 2026.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
