The National Bank does not plan to change the design of the 1-hryvnia and 2-hryvnia coins in the near future. However, such a possibility is not ruled out for the future. The process had actually been initiated prior to the full-scale war, and it is expected that the issue will be revisited once the situation in the country stabilizes. This was stated by NBU Deputy Governor Oleksiy Shaban, according to the Centre for Economic Strategy (CES). He noted:<\/p>\n
The consideration of a design change was prompted by complaints from Ukrainians that the coins looked too similar. Consequently, a working group was formed to address the issue, and discussions began regarding potential design changes for one or both of the coins.<\/p>\n
“We were approached by organizations and associations representing people with disabilities… But, unfortunately, the full-scale war put this work on hold,” the NBU Deputy Governor explained.<\/p>\n
An old 1-hryvnia coin can sell for nearly 40,000<\/p>\n
At the same time, Ukrainians can profitably sell certain old 1-hryvnia coins. Due to their unique characteristics, these coins are highly valued by collectors\u2014so much so that they can fetch thousands of hryvnias. One such valuable coin is the 1-hryvnia piece from 1992, specifically the 1.1AAh variety. According to experts from the “Monety-Yahidky” resource, this coin can sell for between 12,000 and 37,000 UAH. It can be identified by its smooth edge, which lacks any inscription. “The 1-hryvnia coins from 1992 lacked edge lettering; in other words, the edge was smooth. This was because, initially, the tools for applying edge inscriptions did not exist.
