From August 1, 2024, the process of gradual withdrawal of 500 hryvnia banknotes from cash circulation began in Ukraine. These are bills that were issued in 2003-2007.<\/p>\n
Why are the old 500 hryvnias gradually withdrawn from circulation<\/p>\n
According to the National Bank, the main purpose of such a step is to update cash and improve its quality. Old bills have been in circulation for about 20 years, so they have worn out significantly and need to be replaced with more modern counterparts. The process takes place imperceptibly for the population. Financial institutions will simply stop issuing such banknotes to customers through cash registers or ATMs for any transactions.<\/p>\n
Once in banks, old-style 500-hryvnia banknotes will no longer be returned to circulation, the NBU explains.<\/p>\n
Instead, all collected old money will be transferred to storage facilities, where it will be counted and finally disposed of. At the same time, the regulator will stop supplying such bills to strengthen bank cash registers. These bills remain a valid means of payment, so Ukrainians will not have to specially carry them to banks for exchange. There will be no inconvenience for ordinary citizens. The old five-hundred-dollar bill can still be used freely in supermarkets, pharmacies, and markets without any restrictions.<\/p>\n
Ukrainians should be sure that the cash received in the retail network, bank cash desks or in their ATMs is really payable, protected and of the appropriate quality, the National Bank emphasizes.<\/p>\n
We will remind you that earlier the NBU withdrew from circulation the money that was issued before 2003. These are banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 hryvnias, as well as coins – 1, 2, 5, 25 kopecks. And the National Bank began withdrawing the old 100 hryvnias back in 2023.
