Ukraine is facing the threat of a large-scale water supply crisis due to constant attacks on critical infrastructure facilities. In the worst case, city residents will receive water on an hourly schedule or with breaks of several days. This is reported by the Hromadske publication.
Large megacities with centralized water intake and settlements near the front line are the hardest hit. Damage to treatment facilities may result in only technical water being supplied to the network. Such a liquid will be unfit for use without prolonged additional treatment.
The water situation critically depends on the operation of pumping stations and the integrity of main water pipelines. Failure of these facilities threatens a complete stoppage of the resource supply to residential areas. In such conditions, the authorities will be forced to introduce extreme restrictions for the population.
The stability of the system is directly related to the speed of restoration work after possible shelling. Experts warn that the destruction of key nodes will force cities to switch to austerity. Water will be supplied only during certain hours to support the vital activity of cities.
Ukrainians are advised to prepare in advance home supplies of drinking and technical water in case of prolonged blackouts. The experience of front-line areas shows that the restoration of large networks can take much longer than consumers expect. At the same time, alternative sources such as wells will not be able to completely replace the centralized system.
