From the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution in Ukraine, due to the lack of payment of the support fee, well-known varieties of fruit, berry and nut crops have disappeared, including currants Yuvileyna Kopanya, pears Konferencia, apple trees Idared, Golden Delicious and many others. This is reported by Superagronom.com.
“For a variety that has been in the Register for more than 15 years, the right holder must pay UAH 17,400 annually for the maintenance of intellectual property rights and for the right to distribution. This is more than in the USA and comparable to the size of the fee for all EU countries taken together, experts say,” the message says.
The State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution in Ukraine (usually abbreviated to “Register”) is an official list that allows the use, cultivation and commercial sale of seeds/seedlings of certain varieties. After the exclusion of a variety, theoretically, the commercial use of seeds or planting material of such a variety (growing for sale, selling seedlings) becomes illegal or, at least, not recommended.
The situation with the exclusion of such important varieties indicates a systemic problem in the mechanism for maintaining the variety register and requires an urgent response from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and the Ukrainian Institute of Plant Variety Examination.
