The day before, the Kyiv City State Administration published a draft order on increasing public transport fares on its website. According to the document, the cost of a ticket for the metro, bus, tram, trolleybus and funicular will increase to 30 hryvnias from July 15. A monthly pass for all modes of transport will cost 4,875 hryvnias. News.LIVE found out which European capitals residents pay the most for travel and what place Kyiv occupies in this ranking.
Where in Europe is the most expensive travel
The list of leaders in public transport prices is headed by London. In the capital of Great Britain, the fare depends on the zones, time of day and method of payment. A single trip on a bus or tram costs a little more than 2 euros, on the metro – from 3.6 euros. A monthly pass for all zones and modes of transport will cost 235 euros.
In Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, the cost of travel is also quite high. Single tickets for public transport cost about 3.5 euros, and a monthly pass costs 166 euros.
In other European capitals, the following amount is charged for a monthly pass:
Madrid (Spain) – 142 euros;
Berlin (Germany) – 114 euros;
Rome (Italy) – 96 euros;
Paris (France) – 90.8 euros;
Helsinki (Finland) – 57 euros;
Vienna (Austria) – 51 euros;
Tallinn (Estonia) – 30 euros;
Riga (Latvia) – 30 euros;
Vilnius (Lithuania) – 29 euros;
Warsaw (Poland) – 28 euros;
Budapest (Hungary) – 26.32 euros;
Prague (Czech Republic) — 22.62 euros;
Bratislava (Slovakia) — 22 euros.
The lowest fares are in the capital of Romania, Bucharest.
A single trip on land transport and the metro costs 0.6 euros, a monthly pass — 15.36 euros.
How much does it cost to travel in Kyiv
As of May 2026, the fare for public transport in the capital (metro, bus, tram, trolleybus) is 8 UAH. The cost of a monthly pass for all types of transport is 800 UAH.
However, starting July 15, local authorities plan to increase prices for transport services almost four times. Thus, for a trip on the metro, bus, tram or trolleybus, Kyiv residents and guests of the capital will have to pay 30 UAH. The cost of a monthly unlimited travel ticket will be 4,875 UAH.
At the current exchange rate, the future cost of an unlimited monthly pass in Kyiv will be about 96 euros. This is almost the same as what residents of Rome pay, and even more than in Paris, where the pass costs 90.8 euros. At the same time, a Kyiv pass will be more than three times more expensive than in the capital of a neighboring country, Warsaw, and almost six times more expensive than in Bucharest.
