The number of people declaring themselves bankrupt is increasing in Ukraine

In half a year in Ukraine, the court adopted 577 decisions on declaring citizens bankrupt, which is 33% more than in the same period last year, and two cases more than in all of 2023. Such data was published by Opendatabot, Ukrinform reports.

“577 Ukrainians became bankrupt in the first half of 2025 in Ukraine. Such cases increased by 33% compared to the same period in 2024. In general, the most people became bankrupt last year: 926 cases, however, the current year risks catching up with these figures,” the report says.

According to analysts, on average, 3 new bankruptcy cases are opened every day this year. The most cases were opened in Kyiv — 128. The Kyiv region is in second place with 83 cases, followed by Lviv, where 73 applications were filed. In total, 2,948 bankruptcy cases of citizens have been opened over the past five years, 52% of cases since 2021 concern men, and 48% concern women.

According to the arbitration manager, member of the Qualification Commission of Arbitration Managers Denys Lykhopyok, the increase in the number of bankruptcy cases is part of a steady trend that has been going on for several years.

“The procedure is gradually becoming more predictable: judicial practice is being developed, the participants in the process are gaining experience, and the mechanism itself is working more smoothly. At the same time, creditors — banks and financial institutions — are becoming more demanding on the conditions for writing off or restructuring debts,” the expert noted.

As reported, the share of non-performing loans (NPL) in the banking sector of Ukraine as of July 1 of this year decreased to 27.0%, or by 3.3 percentage points compared to the indicator at the beginning of the year. The share of NPLs of individuals decreased by 1.5 pp to 14.0%, and of businesses by 3.5 pp to 35.5%.
