Today, October 19, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has put into circulation a commemorative 2-hryvnia coin dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bohdan Hawrylyshyn—a prominent Ukrainian economist, thinker, public figure, and philanthropist. This was announced by the National Bank.
According to the National Bank of Ukraine, the “100th Anniversary of the Birth of Bohdan Hawrylyshyn” coin is minted from nickel silver. Its reverse features a portrait of the economist, his name, and his well-known motto: “Dream boldly.” The obverse is adorned with a bouquet consisting of a guelder-rose (kalyna) sprig, a maple leaf, and an edelweiss flower. These plants symbolize Ukraine, Canada, and Switzerland—three countries that played a significant role in the life and development of this distinguished Ukrainian.
“This floral metaphor reflects the life journey of Bohdan Hawrylyshyn—whose personality was shaped precisely by these three countries—and symbolizes the significant contribution of Ukrainian figures to global science and culture,” the NBU stated.
The coin’s design was created by artist Yurko Hutsuliak, with sculpting by Volodymyr Atamanchuk and Anatolii Demianenko.
The coin will be available for purchase through the National Bank of Ukraine’s online numismatic store, as well as via authorized distributor banks. The NBU recommends checking the official websites of these banks for information regarding the start of sales.
