According to a European Commission representative, quoted by the dpa agency on Monday, December 30, the European infrastructure is flexible enough for gas from third countries to flow via alternative routes to Central and Eastern Europe.
“The impact of stopping transit through Ukraine on ensuring the EU’s security of supply is limited,” the European Commission representative assured.
The European Commission stated that it has been working in coordination with the member states of the European community for over a year to prepare for alternative schemes. Europe’s gas infrastructure has been strengthened due to significant import capacities for liquefied natural gas (LNG), they added.
In recent years, measures to improve energy efficiency and expand the use of renewable energy sources have also strengthened the reliability of gas supplies, the European Commission further stated.

The contract for the supply of Russian gas to Europe via the territory of Ukraine expires on January 1, 2025.
