Bankrupted banks owed the NBU 37 billion last year

Bankrupt banks have reduced their debt to the National Bank of Ukraine by UAH 457 million to almost UAH 37 billion, according to the Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Taxes Danylo Getmantsev, referring to the NBU report.

2/3 of this amount is the collection of collateral and real estate of guarantors for loans. We are talking about refinancing loans, which were provided mainly in 2008-2014 to banks that were later declared insolvent and withdrawn from the market,” explains Getmantsev. These are loans, in particular, from such banks as “Nadra”, “Delta”, “Financial Initiative”, “Va-bank”, “Finance and Credit”, “Imeksbank”.

Over the past 10 years, insolvent banks have returned approximately UAH 20 billion of debt to the NBU. Another UAH 36.7 billion of debt remains. Every year, the amount returned by banks decreases: 2022 – 1.07 billion UAH, 2023 – 940 million UAH, 2024 – 460 million UAH.

Time is not in the state’s favor. The consideration of court cases is delayed in examinations and appeals, in some cases the statute of limitations is running out, in some cases criminal proceedings are closed due to the statute of limitatison,” adds Hetmantsev.
