Over the three years of large-scale war in Ukraine, more than 63 thousand energy infrastructure facilities were damaged, and in 2024 alone, massive strikes and daily pinpoint attacks on energy infrastructure facilities led to the loss of about 10 GW of generating capacity. This was announced by Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko at a briefing following the results of the 2024-2025 OGP.
In particular, according to the government official, during the heating season, from November 17, 2024 to March 2025, there were 9 massive attacks on the energy system of Ukraine. The most powerful of them was on December 13, when the energy infrastructure was simultaneously attacked by more than 300 means of destruction.
Despite the intensity of the strikes, energy workers were able to restore about 60% of the damaged generation. All nine power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants operated at full capacity. From December 2024, the maximum capacity for electricity imports from the European Union has been increased to 2.1 GW.
In addition, Galushchenko noted that the adaptation of Ukrainian energy legislation to European standards is ongoing, and active work is being carried out to unify the energy markets of Ukraine and the EU. He emphasized that preparations for the next heating season have already begun and all work is being carried out according to schedule.
