Starting today, October 1, 2025, the National Bank of Ukraine has begun the gradual withdrawal of 10-kopeck coins from cash circulation. At the same time, they remain a means of payment – retail chains, the service sector and banks will continue to accept them for payments. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).
The NBU explained that such coins have ceased to play a significant role in cash transactions, and their withdrawal will reduce the costs of the state and the banking system for the production, transportation and servicing of small denominations. There are currently about 4.1 billion 10-kopeck coins in circulation, which is more than a quarter of all change coins.
Coins that end up in banks will no longer be returned to circulation – they will be withdrawn and transferred to the NBU for disposal. New 10-kopeck coins will no longer be minted.
How will the calculations work
Banks will not issue 10 kopecks during cash transactions. In the absence of coins in the cash register, the rules for rounding total amounts in the check will apply:
from 1 to 24 kopecks – down to 00 kopecks;
from 25 to 49 kopecks – up to 50 kopecks;
from 51 to 74 kopecks – down to 50 kopecks;
from 75 to 99 kopecks – up to 00 kopecks.
At the same time, non-cash payments will not be rounded. In particular, Ukrposhta customers were warned that payments will be rounded.
The NBU reminded that similar rules are already applied after the withdrawal of coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 25 kopecks from circulation. According to their estimates, this does not affect the level of inflation, since the changes concern only the total amount in the check.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine wrote about the increase in the number of counterfeit hryvnias and foreign currency in Ukraine in 2024. The most commonly counterfeited banknotes are 500 and 200 hryvnias, as well as 100 and 50 US dollars. At the same time, the NBU emphasizes that the situation is under control, the new banknotes have enhanced protection, and modern protective elements and safe exchange in banks help to distinguish counterfeits.
