Teenagers will be paid no less than adults: what rights do schoolchildren have at summer jobs?

During the summer holidays, thousands of Ukrainian teenagers are looking for an opportunity to earn extra money. The law guarantees them the same labor rights as adult workers, in particular regarding wages. This is reported by Labor and Youth.

In Ukraine, employers do not have the right to pay minors less simply because of their age. If a teenager performs the same work as an adult worker of similar qualifications, the salary must be the same. Such guarantees apply to schoolchildren and students of vocational education institutions who get a job during the holidays or combine study with work.

For minor workers, the legislation provides for special payment conditions. Earnings can be accrued according to the actual time worked or depending on the volume of work performed. If the enterprise uses a piecework system of wages, teenagers must receive the same rates as other employees. At the same time, reduced working hours established for minors should not become a basis for discrimination in pay.

Separately, the law guarantees a minimum wage. If an employee has fulfilled the established norm of work or worked a certain amount of time, his salary cannot be lower than the minimum stipulated by law. However, in practice, there are cases when unscrupulous employers try to save on young employees by offering lower pay or ignoring labor guarantees. That is why, before employment, experts advise to carefully familiarize yourself with the terms of the employment contract. Particular attention should be paid to the amount of salary, work schedule and social guarantees provided by the employer.
